THE WORLD OF THOM DOLAN .Lots of cinematic references comes to mind when you take a look at the work of Thomasine Dolan,the designer behind the Thom Dolan Label. A native from Maryland,Thomasine has been working for Bill Blass,Armani,Banana Republic and Ralph Lauren,before deciding in 2008 that it was the right time to start her own label. The mix of High and Lows,and the use of precious fabrics,the mash up of Vintage style and the movie references like “The Sound of Music”,”Peyton Place” or the most recent “Secretary”sums up her eclectic but feminine style. Eve Arnold the Grand Dame of photo journalism has died a week ago in London. She was the first American woman to join the prestigious Magnum Photo Agency,she will be mostly remembered for her memorable portraits of  all the First Ladies,Malcom X,famous actresses like Liz Taylor and Joan Crawford,..but her signature and most accomplished works are the candid portraits of Marilyn Monroe up until the star last movie  “The Misfits” in 1961.

Here are some pictures of one of our little gatherings with “adopted” son Marco Russo aka Marchino  Prada designer visiting from Milano and model du jour,Sojourner Morrell. The two met at the Prada Resort lookbook shoot and became friends instantly.See you soon guys!!!

She started her career as an actress in the early 20′s and later on started to design dresses for her Hollywood friends,..It did not take much before she got hired as a costume designer for being responsible for all the costumes of the famous couple Astaire-Rogers movie “Shall we dance”. From then on “Irene” as she dubbed herself, became one of the most requested and influential designers for the silver screen. One of her best works to date is the wardrobe that she created for Lana Turner in “The postman always rings twice” where she pushed fashion to places where any other designers have never dare to go. Memorable is the white two piece swimsuit with matching turban that the “seductress Lana” wears in that famous scene. In the 50′s when her career was at it’s peak, tired of all the  exclusive clauses that those big Majors were imposing on her, she decided to open her own Couture Salon launching her as an American Fashion Designer. But her love for the movies and her friendship with the upcoming huge star Doris Day, took her back to the movie business where she created original costumes for Doris’ famous movies such as “Midnight lace”. That same year she was nominated for another Academy Award. Irene died suddenly in 1962, but her legacy and her creativity have been very inspirational for today’s designers like Mugler, Gaultier, Mizrahi,Galliano and McQueen.

If Monsieur Des Esseintes, the reclusive eccentric of the famous novel “Against the Grain” could pick his wardrobe we are pretty sure that he would buy the entire Spring Collection of Italian born Designer Dominique Masullo. The lounginess aspect of the clothes mixed with the opulence of the fabric and the handmade detail would be the perfet match for such an aesthete. Dominique who has studied in Antwerp and worked with Belgian designers such as Dries Van Noten, Veronique Braquinho, and Bernard Willhelm, creates beautiful clothes. His starting point is the “easiness” of a Man’s Pajamas and brings them to life in the form of wearable outerwear. “Change of Season” Muse Sabrina (Querci), during a recent buying trip to Antwerp met him by chance at a popular hangout. After hearing about his collection she got immediately smitten with him & his talent. From this unexpected encounter a great collaboration has been forged between the two. “I always wanted to be a sculptor,for me working with fabric or marble is exactly the same thing” This quote explain really well the work of one of the last true genius of Couture : Mme Gres. The  BOURDELLE Museum in Paris is dedicating her  a show (until the end of July) with more than 80 pieces some from the Galliera Museum some from private Collectors. A well deserved tribute to this  underrated artist and her signature styles,drapery and bias cut mostly in unpatterned monochrome colored jersey .So many contemporary designers such as Alaia, Rei Kawakubo ,Sophia Kokosalaki, Haider Hackermann have been inspired by her neoclassical style. We just discovered on Italian Elle, gorgeous pictures of another enigmatic character,the actress Tilda Swinton in a pictorial hommage dedicated to the genious of Mme Gres.

He was the first one who introduced the concept of “sculpture” in fashion, that had it’s big moment in 1970′s Haute Couture. Always open to innovative ideas even when retired back in 2003, he did encourage new designers such as Sybilla and Bernhard Willhelm to take the reign of his Atelier. For a few seasons they created capsule collections inspired by the great Masters. We at CHANGE OF SEASON have been lucky enough to snatch a few pieces from the infamous Spring 2004 collection designed by Willhelm,come see it! Also if you are in Philadelphia make sure to visit the Capucci exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art,more than 80 pieces will be showcases until June 5th.
